Like with a lot of recreational games, the quality of game play in Spikeball depends on two main factors – the people you play with and the equipment quality. You may have waited all week to play roundnet with friends at your weekend barbeque, but if you’re using a subpar Spikeball set, you could end up not having as much fun as you’d anticipated.

So if you’re ever going to get into roundnet, your first move should be to invest in the best Spikeball set that fits your needs. This means you will need to carefully consider the features and cost. You’ll also have to read through tons of Spikeball reviews to make sure that you’re investing in the right set. The whole research process can be lengthy and complicated for those of you who want to make an informed decision.

That’s why we decided to take a look at some of the top sets available in the market and review them for you. Here are some of our favorites that will help you make the right buying decision:

1. Spikeball 3 Ball Kit – Our Top Pick

Main Highlights – Average cost, foldable legs, comes with 2 extra balls

Our top pick is the classic Spikeball set that comes with three balls and a 36 inches regulation size net. This one wins because it ticks all the boxes. This set meets all our expectations in terms of pricing, build quality, features, play quality, and ball quality. Although we did find a few flaws, they are somewhat subjective and therefore, are not major deal-breakers.

What We Like:

There are so many things we like about this Spikeball game set that it’s hard to know exactly where to start. Our favorite feature, however, would have to be the foldable legs. You’ll love this feature for several reasons. First, it’s easier to store the net when you can easily fold the legs to fit it in cramped spaces. So you’ll be able to just store it away in your closet, trunk, or garage.

The foldable feature also makes the legs much tougher. This means they’ll be able to withstand the impact of errant falls and dives that tend to happen during a competitive roundnet game.

The balls that come with this Spikeball set have a really good weight to them. You can see that they’re thicker and more durable even from just the feel. While this means that they don’t have a particularly good bounce, according to the spikeball reviews, some players prefer it this way. All in all, this is the best mid-range Spikeball set that you can get.

You can also purchase the Spikeball Spikebuoy on Water Accessory for your Spikeball set if you want to play the game on water. The attachment comes with leg floats and an anchor bag to keep the roundnet steady on water. All you have to do is attach the leg floats to your spikeball set and fill the anchor bag with something heavy and you’re good to go – just a few extra steps for a whole lot of added fun.

2. Spikeball Pro Kit (Tournament Edition)

Main Highlights – Tournament standard Spikeball set, foldable legs, complimentary accessories, free tournament registration

If you’re looking for the Spikeball set of all Spikeball sets, this is the one (here’s our full review). This set beats every other set in the market in every aspect. The main drawback is that it’s slightly pricier than most roundnet sets. For professional players and players who want nothing but the best, having to pay a few extra bucks isn’t too much of a deal-breaker when the quality makes up for it.

What We Like:

This set has a much sturdier build than the other roundnet sets from Spikeball, which is something you’d expect from a professional set. According to the manufacturer, the rims and legs are 33% sturdier. That doesn’t mean you can trample on it and expect it to withstand the impact. However, it does endure most errant falls and dives.

Like the classic Spikeball set, this too comes with foldable legs. So you can use it to play roundnet even on uneven surfaces. Plus, they’ve improved the stability with a no-slip rubber coating to give you a more stable playing surface. This makes a lot of difference in the quality of your game. The net that comes with this set has also been upgraded to endure professional play.

What we love about this set is that it comes with two Pro Balls. These balls have an added texture that improves your spin and gives you more control. You’ll find it much easier to add a top spin to your smashes or a back spin to your drop shots. That’s everything a serious player would want in roundnet balls.

Another thing we like about this set is that it comes with several complimentary accessories that are not available with other Spikeball sets. You get a portable ball pump gauge and a serving line along with the regular equipment.

To sweeten the deal, Spikeball has even thrown in a free registration to a tournament organized by the Spikeball Roundnet Association. So if you’re a serious player with a competitive streak, this might just be the best Spikeball set for you.

Slightly pricey

The net is difficult to set up/tighten

The pump quality isn’t great

Balls tend to deflate easily

3. JOGENMAX Spike Battle Ball Game Set

Main Highlights – fully foldable, durable metal legs with suction cups, includes glow-in-the-dark balls

This metal roundnet with unique folding design offers the best of both worlds – metal legs and frame to ensure durability, and a fully foldable design for that extra convenience factor. Besides the metal legs and frame, the roundnet has an overall high-quality build and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

What We Like:

The unique design and folding mechanism of this roundnet make it a strong contender for the top spot on this list. The roundnet has a fully foldable design which allows you to instantly fold it down or out without going through the trouble of assembling and disassembling it.

If durability is a priority for you, you’ll love the metal legs this set comes with. The legs even have suction cups which will allow you to use the roundnet on smooth surfaces indoors. Another handy feature is the luminous belts on the strap around the net and glow-in-the-dark balls that come with the set. You don’t have to worry about the sun setting while you’re enjoying a fun outdoor game because the luminous features will allow you to play even in the dark.

Additional Perks:

Unconditional 60-day return/exchange policy

Drawstring carrying bag

Main Flaws:

Metal parts can be damaged or misshapen in transit (can be easily exchanged)

Some holes tend to be too small for the pins

Available on Amazon

4. GoSports Slammo Game Set – Best Bang for the Buck

Main Highlights – Affordable, comes with a training ball, balls have excellent bounce

While there are serious roundnet players, there are also those who have just discovered the game. These players may eventually want to spend a little extra on a high-quality Spikeball set, but not just yet. For them, budget is usually the main concern, although they don’t want to compromise on quality altogether. That’s where this roundnet set from Slammo comes in. It has everything that a beginner would need to start playing the game at about half the price of an original Spikeball set.

What We Like:

Aside from the significantly lower price, what we like most about this roundnet set is that it comes with a training ball. You get two competition size 9cm balls, which is the size you would typically get with most roundnet sets. Plus, there’s an additional ball that’s slightly larger at 12cm. This is much easier to handle for beginners and kids who are just starting to learn how to control the ball.

We’ve also noticed from the Slammo reviews that the Slammo roundnet balls have a much better bounce than the Spikeball balls. Read our Spikeball vs. Slammo comparison to learn more. A lot of players prefer more bounce to their roundnet balls because they feel that it adds a competitive rush to the game. So if you’re one of those, you have a good reason to like this set.

Material quality is slightly flimsier

The rim is susceptible to warping under exposure to the elements (preventable with proper storage when not in use)

The net is difficult to adjust/set up for proper bounce

Low-quality clips on the frame

5. Win SPORTS Pro Volleyball Spike Game Set – Best bang for the buck

Main highlights- affordable, comes with pump and needle, foldable legs

This set is an excellent choice for someone looking for a more affordable option. Good quality roundnet sets can be expensive with the high-quality material they use. An original spikeball set, for example, can be too big of an investment for a beginner who just wants to try out the sport.

With the game gaining popularity and with more people interested to try their hands at this exciting sport, the market for roundnet sets is getting more competitive and new good quality sets are coming out at various price points. This Win Sports set is the best option if you’re interested in a fun spikeball experience without spending too much.

What we like:

You can get a good bang for your buck with this set that comes with a training ball and two competition balls. The set even includes a pump and needle so you can save the trouble of purchasing one separately.

Plus, the attractive orange color sets it apart from most other spikeball sets in the market. It has foldable legs and comes with a carry case, which allows you to easily take it along anywhere you please. What we like most about the set is that it has good quality build with strong hooks and durable frames at a fraction of the price of an original Spikeball brand game set.

Additional Perks:

Backpack-style carrying bag

Main Flaws:

Net is slightly loose and needs adjustment for proper bounce

The net readjustments might affect longevity

Balls do not have enough bounce (subjective)

Available on Amazon

Main highlights: Available in different colors, durable legs with non-slip design

If you’re looking for a good game set at mid-range price point, this is a great option. The set offers high-quality build at a reasonable price point and even gives you the option to choose between different colors. You can either go with the yellow one similar to the original Spikeball set or green, which resembles the Slammo set.

What we like:

What we like about this set is that comes with an updated structure for ease of assembly, which makes it perfect for beginners and overall convenience for any player. It uses a highly elastic fabric for the net to improve the bounce quality and comes with hooks to adjust the tightness. The legs have a non-slip feature which allows you to set up and play the game on any surface without having to worry about it slipping around.

Main highlights: comes in two different styles

With this roundnet set you can choose either the original black and yellow design or the stars and stripes design. Although not as affordable as some of the other sets on this list, this game set it is still a more cost-effective option than the original Spikeball set.

What we like: The option to choose different styles like the unique stars and stripes design can be an attractive perk for some players. This set also comes with a rule book with guidelines about the game which can be helpful for a rookie player who isn’t as well-acquainted with the sport. You can also check out our list of FAQs if you choose to go for a set that doesn’t come with a rule book.

Additional Perks:

Nylon carrying bag

Main Flaws:

Material quality is slightly flimsy

Net does not allow for enough bounce

Only comes with two balls

Available on Amazon

Bottom Line

Although we have a top pick among these sets, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best Spikeball set for you. It all depends on your preferences and how much you’re willing to spend. It also depends on who’s going to use it, what you’re going to use it for, and how often. If you’re a serious player who might want to enter roundnet competitions at some point, you should definitely go for the Spikeball Pro set.

For beginners and casual players who are going to use the set every once in a while, the Slammo set is a great option. The Win Sport set is perfect for those of you who aren’t too keen on spending too much money on a game. These sets are also a great if you’re looking for something that your kids will mostly use.

However, casual players who will be playing roundnet regularly may want to invest in a sturdier set like our top pick – the classic Spikeball set or the Jogenmax set. These sets are perfect even for serious players who want something for occasional casual play.

For those on a budget, the B Bochamtec and Kan Jam sets are also good options if you want something slightly more affordable than the classic Spikeball set. So consider all these factors and then refer to our guide to choose the best roundnet set that fits your needs.

A
Brief History

Both Spikeball and Slammo are roundnet games, with Spikeball being the original. Since the brand could not get a patent on the product, several other companies started coming up with similar equipment. Slammo is one of the leading products inspired by the original Spikeball set and is manufactured by GoSports.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424" data-ad-slot="3845954048"></ins>

While Slammo has its own set of perks, it still cannot compare to the original when it comes to popularity owing to Spikeball’s appearance on “Shark Tank”. This is probably one of the biggest differences between the two games. Not surprisingly, search queries for “Spikeball” tend to spike dramatically during summers. Even during its lowest months, it still performs a lot better than the term “Slammo.”

The
Differences

Now let’s get to the main point – How do the games differ vs. one another? Here are the main ways in which Spikeball differs from Slammo so you’ll know which is better for you:

Spikeball Frame Has Adjustable Legs – This is easily the biggest benefit of buying a Spikeball set and the biggest difference between the two games. It comes with adjustable legs that you can fold and bend as needed.

Not only does this make the legs more durable, it also gives you more flexibility to play on rough and uneven terrains. So if you ever have trouble finding perfectly flat spots to play roundnet, Spikeball may be the perfect choice.

On the other hand, the legs on a Slammo frame stand straight up. This makes it difficult to position the net on uneven terrains, and you’ll need a flat surface for proper game play. So there’s a bit of limitation with Slammo when it comes to playing surface and frame flexibility.

Slammo Comes With a Training Ball – This is one of the biggest advantages Slammo has over Spikeball. It comes with a training ball that’s slightly larger than a tournament-size ball. This is great for beginners and kids who are still learning to get used to the game, as it’s much easier to use. This is something that Spikeball has missed and Slammo has capitalized on.

Differences in Ball Quality – Another major difference between Spikeball and Slammo is in the quality of balls that come with each set. As expected of an original and more expensive set, the Spikeball balls are of higher quality. It’s easy to tell even just by holding them. They feel thicker and heavier than Slammo balls. The overall make also seems more durable.

Image Credit: Elvert Barnes on Flickr

However, that doesn’t mean we should discredit the Slammo balls altogether because the brand has been making improvements to their balls over the years. They do have a few advantages over the Spikeball balls, which would appeal to some players. Slammo balls have a better bounce and could offer excellent game play. They’re great for beginners and players who prefer more bounce to their roundnet balls.

Cost Differences – Slammo is a cheaper alternative to Spikeball. You can typically get it for $20 to $30 cheaper, which is why a lot of people go for it. Considering how there aren’t drastic quality differences, it’s a great choice if cost is your main concern.

Some players, however, may not be willing to sacrifice other factors like material quality and foldable legs just to save a few bucks. So it’s up to your individual needs and preferences whether you should consider this factor.

Overall Quality – There’s also some difference in the overall material and build quality of the two sets, although it’s nothing major. Spikeball has a strong and sturdy build with high-quality plastic, which is expected of a pricier set. Although Slammo is also durable, the material is slightly flimsier than the quality of plastic used in the original set.

So there could be some doubt about its ability to withstand exposure to the elements. If you get a Slammo set, it would be best to store it when not in use instead of leaving it out in the open. There have also been some complaints about the net being difficult to adjust and stretch for proper bounce. This is likely because the clips on the frame are not particularly high in quality.

In summary, while the differences are subtle, with Spikeball you pay a price premium compared to Slammo but you get a higher quality ball and a more versatile and durable frame plus net. Also, Spikeball is generally positioned to be played by the enthusiast or pro and Slammo is more for beginners & amateurs.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424" data-ad-slot="3845954048"></ins>

The
Similarities

Besides the major differences between
Spikeball and Slammo, it’s also important to consider some of the things these
two games have in common so you can make an informed decision.

One of the main similarities between the
two is that they both have a lifetime warranty. This is great for recreational
game equipment because they’re likely to get damaged over time. So you’ll be
getting your money’s worth regardless of which set you decide to get.

Plus, they both come with carrying bags so
you can easily take your roundnet set with you to the beach or on a camping
trip. This gives both sets easy portability, which is an essential feature for
outdoor recreational games.

Both Slammo and Spikeball come with excellent
customer service – a big plus for any product. Besides a quick response time,
the two brands also make quick, no-fuss replacements in case of damaged
products.

Which
is Better?

The big question now, after seeing all the
differences and similarities, is which of these two sets is a better option? The
answer depends on your individual preferences, requirements, and skill levels.

The original Spikeball set does have a better quality overall but it also costs more. At the same time, you can adjust it for playing on uneven surfaces. The Slammo set may be cheaper, but you may need to slightly compromise on the material quality. However, it’s still an excellent set for beginners and kids because it comes with a training ball.

Here’s our final verdict:

You should get the Spikeball set if:

Quality is your biggest concern

You want to use balls with a
little weight to them

You often have to play on
rough, uneven surfaces

Cost isn’t a big concern to you
especially if the quality makes up for it

It’s mostly going to be used by
advanced roundnet players.

You should get the Slammo set if:

Cost is your main concern

You want to use balls with a
good bounce to them

You usually have a flat spot to
play on

It’s mostly going to be used by
beginners and kids.

Bottom
Line

While there are several differences between
these two roundnet sets, not all of those differences ultimately determine one
set’s superiority. Of course the foldable legs of the Spikeball set may give it
more advantage. At the same time, the ball quality differences could be good or
bad depending on the individual preferences of each player.

So consider all these factors that we’ve carefully collected for you, and make a decision based on what you need and what matters to you. We also have a guide to frequently asked questions in Spikeball if you want to learn more.

Spikeball may not date back to the time of the Romans or originate from Ancient Egypt, but it does have quite an interesting history. The game emerged in the 20th century and it has only been about a decade since it gained mainstream popularity. Since then, it has made TV show appearances and gained recognition from influential sports entertainers. In this post, we’re going to help you trace back the history of Spikeball and its emergence into popular culture.

The Origin and History of Spikeball

Spikeball was originally created by toy maker Jeff Knurek in 1989 and was marketed by Japanese entertainment company Tomy. While there was a brief spike in popularity from 1989-1995, it quickly faded due to outdated equipment. Nearly a decade later, Spikeball Inc.’s CEO Chris Ruder helped revitalize the sport.

As Chris Ruder explains in an interview with Kiplinger, it all started on a trip to Hawaii back in 2003, where his brother’s friends brought their old Spikeball set. He fell in love with the game as they played it on the beach. They even got a few passersby asking about it.

Image Credit: Pablo Punk on Flickr

They began talking about reviving the game in the following years, and Chris started conducting market research to see what he could do. He discovered that the game’s trademark had expired and there was no patent on it. So he acquired the trademark after spending $800. They also managed to get a patent to make some design changes and improve the original equipment.

Eventually, he launched Spikeball Inc. in
2008 with his basement functioning as a warehouse. By 2013, they had made $1
million in annual revenue.

How
Spikeball Gained Mainstream Popularity

By 2014, big sporting retailers like Dick’s
Sporting Goods had taken notice of Spikeball. Instead of the company having to
pitch the retailer, the retailer came to them and asked to carry their products
in their stores.

Google Trends search volume for “Spikeball” since 2004

This kind of recognition from retailers
like Dick’s isn’t surprising considering how fun it is to play
the game. However, this did not necessarily launch the game into mainstream
popularity although it helped them generate consistent revenue.

It was Spikeball Inc.’s appearance on
“Shark Tank” that put the game in the limelight. Chris and his team made it
into the tank on the final episode of season 6, which aired on May 15, 2015. Mr.
Wonderful and Daymond John were the two Sharks that extend him an offer.

He negotiated a deal with Daymond and
offered him 20% of the company for $500,000. However, they did not close the
deal in the months that followed. In spite of this, the game had already gained
a lot of exposure through the show and that’s how Spikeball founded mainstream success.

The game has since been featured by Dude
Perfect, one of the most influential sports entertainment groups with 38
million YouTube subscribers. It has also gained recognition from influential
shows like “The Today Show” and publications like Inc. Magazine. This has
further amplified the game’s popularity in the mainstream media.

The
Rechristening of Spikeball

With mainstream success comes recognition
from all the right places. It also meant that Spikeball Inc. started getting
some competition. Other brands came up with their own Spikeball equipment to
monetize the game’s newfound fame. This meant that the Spikeball brand could
end up losing their trademark if more brands continued to market similar
equipment.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424" data-ad-slot="3845954048"></ins>

So Spikeball Inc. came up with a solution –
they would have to rename the sport to protect their brand trademark. They came
up with the name “roundnet” because the game is played with a round net. However,
people still popularly refer to it as Spikeball or use the two terms
interchangeably because that’s how it originally earned its fame.

Other
Roundnet Brands

Spikeball may be the biggest roundnet
equipment manufacturer but there are several other brands that have gained
significant popularity. So you might find some people incorrectly referring to
equipment from these brands as “Spikeball.” This can be quite confusing for
someone who’s new to the game and wants to buy a set.
The other popular roundnet brands are:

Slammo

Bounceball (mostly popular in
Brazil)

Revol (shortly gained
popularity in 2015)

Among these, Slammo is the closest
competitor. By providing decent equipment at a much lower price, it has managed
to become a popular alternative for the original Spikeball. However, many
players still prefer the original over Slammo because of a few differences
in quality.

Final
Thoughts

As you can see, the history of Spikeball is quite interesting as the game has seen a lot of ups and downs over the past decades. Thanks to mainstream media and recognition from reputable sporting goods retailers, Spikeball founded the kind of success it deserves. Make the most of this post to understand the game’s history better and check out our previous Spikeball resources for more information. We also have a FAQ guide if you’re looking to get more insight about Spikeball

When you’re a serious roundnet player, it’s not enough that you know everything about the history of the game and how to play it. If you’re looking to enhance your skills and play at a competitive level, you’d want to use a kit that offers exceptional game play and can withstand heavy impact. At times, even the classic Spikeball kit may be unable to meet all of your expectations.

To address these needs of serious players, Spikeball Inc. came up with a Pro Kit that’s meant to offer superior game play along with enhanced features. However, this also means that it’s more expensive than the regular kit, so you may be a bit skeptical about investing in it if you’re unsure of just how much better it is.

That’s why we decided to put together a Spikeball Pro Kit review that will help you make an informed decision. In this post, you will get a clear idea of what makes the Pro kit much better than the regular and why you should invest in it.

#1: Enhanced
Ball Design Makes for Better Spin

The Pro kit’s most notable feature is that it comes with a set of Pro balls which are designed with tournament use in mind. The Pro balls that come with the tournament edition Spikeball kit have a dimpled texture on the surface.

This added texture gives you a better grip on the ball, and you can put much more spin on it to enhance delivery. It also lets you control your passes more easily for more accuracy. Not surprisingly, these gameplay-enhancing features make them very popular among professional roundnet players and competitive players.

The regular balls, on the other hand, have a smooth surface that are not as easy to grip and control. Although they’re great for casual play, the regular balls may not work so well for competitive players because ball control and delivery is everything to them.

#2: Stronger
Build to Withstand High-Intensity Games

Anyone who’s played roundnet knows just how intense some matches can get even if they’re just between friends. It’s only natural that professional matches will be much more intense than this. There are bound to be some extra hard hits against the net frame, and some overeager players might even end up falling on it while making a dive.

The regular Spikeball kit may not have enough
strength to withstand these harsh impacts for long, and you could end up
breaking its rims or legs after a while. That’s why Spikeball Inc. made
significant improvements to the body strength and overall quality of their Pro
kit. Since it’s a tournament edition, it’s built to withstand the level of
intensity that you would see in professional play.

The company claims that the legs and rims
are 33% stronger than the regular kit. Although we have no way of proving
whether that’s an accurate number, we have noticed that the legs and rims do
seem sturdier on the Pro kit.

If you watch the video below, you can see
that the rims are significantly thicker than the rims on a regular kit. So they
are less likely to break even if a player crashes onto them while diving or if a
ball bounces against it after an extra hard hit. The legs seem thicker too even
from the way they look. They have more weight to them so they feel much heavier
and sturdier than the regular kit.

One of the main drawbacks of the regular kit is that the rims and legs are a tad light. So although the kit is suitable for casual play, it could shift after a harder-than-usual hit. Since the Pro kit has some added weight, it won’t be able to move around so much during game play. This means you can play consistently with little disturbance. It’s easy to tell that the Spikeball team has added a lot of reinforcement to make sure these legs and rims hold up well even during high-intensity games.

#3:
Small Design Elements with Big Impact

Besides the stronger build and the enhanced ball design, there are a few design elements in the Spikeball Pro Kit that seem insignificant but have a huge impact. It’s very easy to overlook these elements and you may not even notice them at first, but they play a crucial role in enhancing the overall quality of play.

One of those elements is the color of the
legs. Instead of using yellow like they did in the regular kit, they’ve used
black. The dark color contrasts against the bright yellow rims, which makes the
frame much easier to see in your peripheral vision. This undoubtedly means you’ll
be able to spike your ball more accurately.

There’s also an aesthetic benefit to the
color of the legs. With roundnet games, there’s a lot of movement that could
leave scratches and marks on your roundnet kit. Over time, these scratches will
build up and make the kit look worn and damaged.

Since the Pro kit has dark-colored legs,
scuffing and scratches are a lot less visible. Although this is a minor factor,
it’s definitely a plus point for someone who’s in the
market for a Spikeball kit.

Another small but significant element that we really like is the no-slip rubber that coats the legs. This makes it much easier to balance the kit on any surface and ensure that it stays put during high-intensity games. Passionate roundnet players will love this feature because it gives them the freedom to play anywhere no matter how uneven the surface may be.

#4: Valuable
Add-Ons

Finally, the Spikeball Pro Kit comes with a bunch of high-value add-ons which make it the most comprehensive Spikeball kit. Here’s what you might like:

Ball Pump and Pressure Gauge – The kit
includes a ball pump and pressure gauge so you can easily maintain proper air
pressure in your Pro balls. This is super convenient in case your ball ever
gets inflated in the middle of a game, and we all know how annoying that can
be. You can check out our Spikeball FAQs
page for more info on inflating your balls.

Pro Backpack – Although the other
Spikeball kits also come with a drawstring bag, the Pro kit comes with a Pro
backpack with enhanced design. This bag has padded shoulder straps so you can
carry it more comfortably.

Free Tournament Registration – Every Spikeball
Pro Kit comes with a free registration to the official Spikeball Roundnet
Association Tournament. If you were to register separately, you would have to
spend around $40 on this. If you’re a competitive player with an intention to
compete in official tournaments, this free registration adds a lot of value.

So even if the Pro Spikeball Kit costs a
bit more than the classic one, remember that you’re not just buying the kit.
You’ll be getting quite a few add-ons that add value to your purchase, and you’ll
definitely be getting your money’s worth.

Bottom
Line

Besides these factors that we’ve
highlighted, it goes without saying that the Spikeball Pro Kit also inherits
some of the classic kit’s best features. For instance, it too has foldable legs
that make the kit easier to store and transport.

It also comes with a lifetime replacement
warranty like other Spikeball kits, so you won’t have to worry about broken
parts. All of these factors make the Spikeball Pro Kit an excellent investment
for any serious and competitive player. You can get it from the official
Spikeball website or from Amazon. For more information on where

#2: How
Did Spikeball Start?

Spikeball first began as roundnet and was originally created by Jeff Knurek in 1989. However, his equipment was superseded in the 1990s. Its fame as Spikeball began around 2008 when Spikeball Inc., headed by Chris Ruder, started promoting the game. For more information, check out our Spikeball history post.

#3: How
Did Spikeball Become Mainstream?

Most people started learning about Spikeball on “Shark Tank” when the company made their way into the tank in 2015. Even though they did not close the deal, the show gave Spikeball tons of exposure and helped it achieve mainstream popularity.

#4: When
Was Spikeball on “Shark Tank”?

Spikeball was on “Shark Tank” in the final
episode of Season 6, which aired on May 15, 2015.

#5: Who
Invested in Spikeball on “Shark Tank”?

Daymond John and Mr. Wonderful were the two
Sharks who extended an offer for Spikeball on “Shark Tank.” Spikeball Founder
and CEO, Chris Ruder managed to negotiate a deal with Daymond, offering 20% of
the company for $500,000. However, they did not close the deal in the months
that followed.

#6: Who
Invented Spikeball?

The original Spikeball creator was a man
named Jeff Knurek, who developed the game and its equipment in 1989. However,
the game was not patented and had an expired trademark when current Spikeball
Inc. Founder Chris Ruder showed an interest in reviving it. The game owes its
current popularity to Spikeball Inc., which was responsible for promoting it.

#7: What’s the Difference between Spikeball versus Slammo?

There’s a lot of confusion about the differences between Spikeball and Slammo, when really the two are just different roundnet equipment brands. Roundnet is the actual name of the game, while Spikeball is just the manufacturer.

However, a lot of people refer to the game as Spikeball because it is the name of the brand that revived it and promoted it for mainstream popularity. Slammo is just another manufacturer of roundnet equipment.

#8: Which
is Better – Spikeball vs. Slammo?

There are several differences in the quality and make of equipment from the two brands. These differences do not necessarily make one better than the other because it’s all subjective.

Whether Spikeball or Slammo is better for you depends on your personal preferences and needs. You can check out our Spikeball vs. Slammo article to better understand these differences and which one would be better for you.

#9: How
Do You Set Up Spikeball?

You can set up your Spikeball equipment by clipping
the net around the rims of the frame. You can then make adjustments by pulling
around the areas that feel loose. Make sure the net is tight enough for that
your ball bounces at least 12 inches when you drop it from 3 feet above. Check
out the following video for a visual explainer on how to set up your Spikeball
set.

#10:
How Do You Play Spikeball?

Spikeball is typically a four-player game with two players on each team. The two teams line up across each other with the net in the middle. One player serves the ball by bouncing it on the net and the opposing team tries to return it.

The goal is to make it harder for the other team to return the ball so that you can score a point, just like in volleyball. You can learn more about the detailed rules in our how-to guide.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424"
     data-ad-slot="3845954048"></ins>

#11:
How Do You Serve in Spikeball?

When serving in Spikeball, you need to
stand at least 6 feet away from the net or you’ll end up faulting. You can’t
serve straight out of your hand either. The ball needs to be at least 2 inches
in the air when you hit it. Besides this, you need to actually hit the ball.
Other actions like dropping the ball, missing a hit, or catching the ball after
a toss would count as a fault.

#12:
How Tight Should the Spikeball Net Be?

The tightness of the net will affect the
quality of play in Spikeball. So you need to make sure that it’s tight enough
to give the ball proper bounce. The perfect net tension is when you drop a ball
from 3 feet above and it bounces at least 12 inches in the air after hitting
the net.

#13:
How Inflated Should the Spikeball Ball Be?

According to the official Spikeball rules,
you should inflate the ball till it has a circumference of 12 inches. This
would make the ball slightly larger than a softball. However, fully inflating
the ball would also make it harder and more difficult to handle. Some players
recommend inflating it only till it is semi-soft so that you can control it
more easily.

#14:
Can You Play Spikeball with 2 Players?

While Spikeball is typically a four-player
game, it is possible for two players to play against each other. That being
said, it’s a bit difficult for one-on-one games to get competitive. So you can
make your own rule modifications to keep the game more interesting. Typically,
players only have two touches per possession in 2-player games, unlike the
usual three touches.

#15:
Can You Play Spikeball with 3 Players?

You need four players to play Spikeball according to the official rules. Although you can technically play with three players, you will need to change up the rules a bit to keep things fair and competitive.

All three players can play against each other in a 3-player game. Here, you will need to follow a rotation in which all players get an equal turn i.e. Player 1, then Player 2, and then Player 3 before it goes back to Player 1.

You can also play a 3-person game as a team, but this will involve players switching teams in the middle of the game. Player 1 will serve to Player 2, who will have Player 3 as their teammate. Player 3 has the option to spike the ball or pass it. Whichever player spikes the ball will then be on their own with the other two players teaming up against them.

There’s also an option of two players playing against each other while the third player acts as an all-time setter. So each player can use the third player to get better control of the ball. The setter can only play the second touch and only pass the ball.

#16:
Can You Play Spikeball Indoors?

You can play Spikeball indoors, but you
will need ample space to move around as needed. So if you want to ensure good
game play, make sure there isn’t any space constriction that could prevent players
from moving around freely. As for the playing surface, gym floors may be a
great option.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424"
     data-ad-slot="3845954048"></ins>

#17:
Can You Bring Spikeball on a Plane?

Yes. Spikeball comes with a drawstring bag
in which you can easily fold up your net as a carry-on. However, it would be a
good idea to check with individual airlines and see if their rules vary.

#18: Where Can You Buy a Spikeball Set?

You can purchase the original Spikeball equipment from the official Spikeball Inc. website. It’s also available from major retailers like Amazon and Dick’s Sporting Goods. If you have other questions, check out our guide on where to buy a Spikeball set and some of our top Spikeball set recommendations to make an informed decision.

#19:
What is a Pocket in Spikeball?

A pocket in Spikeball is when your ball
lands on the net but rolls to the rim rather than bouncing out. Hitting a
pocket would be considered a fault.

#20:
What is Spikeball Pro?

Spikeball Pro, as the name suggests, is a
professional version of the original Spikeball set. Since Pro sets are built
for tournament use, they tend to have a stronger build. The balls that come
with a Pro set will also have added texture that allows players to have more
control over the ball. Naturally, it is also more expensive than a classic set.

#21:
What’s the Average Spikeball Price?

Spikeball price varies according to various
factors like the number of balls included and the make quality. The classic 3-ball
Spikeball set would typically set you back by $50 to $60. Professional sets
would cost more, while beginner sets would cost slightly less. You can also get
cheaper roundnet equipment from other brands like Slammo, but a lot of players
prefer the original Spikeball.

#22:
What Age is Spikeball Good for?

Spikeball is suitable for all ages. The
balls that come with classic and pro sets may be a bit difficult to handle for
kids. However, there’s an option to get training balls that are slightly larger
and therefore, easier for kids to handle.

Conclusion

With these 22 answers, you should now have
plenty of information about Spikeball such as Spikeball history, how it gained
mainstream popularity, and how to play it. Make the most of this knowledge to understand
the game a bit better. If you ever need more detailed information, you can

Are you in the market for your very own
Spikeball set? After you’ve carefully considered factors like cost and
frequency of use, you may have decided on which set
to get. The next thing to consider is where to get a set. Your choice of retailer
is very important because it’s the factor that will influence how great of a
deal you manage to get and how good of a service you receive.

What
to Consider in a Store/Retailer

Although Spikeball sets are available at
the official Spikeball website, some of you may want to look for other options.
To make sure you purchase a Spikeball set from the right retailer, you need to
consider a few factors. You should consider how reputable the store is, because
reputable stores are more likely to sell authentic products. They are also more
likely to provide good service pre and post purchase.

As for cost, most retailers will sell the
product for the same price unless they’re running a special discount. So if you
still want an authentic game set for a cheaper price, you might want to check
whether the retailer offers used Spikeball sets as well. Some retailers may
offer the same product from different sellers at varying prices, so you might
want to consider those options as well.

Another factor to consider is whether you’d
like to get it delivered or pick it up from a store. Some retailers will only
offer online purchases and deliver the product. So if you’re more inclined on
picking up the item from a store, you might want to look for retailers who have
physical stores as well. These retailers are likely to have an in-store pickup
option while letting you check product availability through their website.

Where
to Get a Spikeball Set

Aside from the official Spikeball website,
Amazon is one of the most popular places to get a Spikeball set. It’s a great
option because you can choose from different sellers. This means that you might
have a better chance of finding a Spikeball set at a lower rate as well as
finding used Spikeball sets.

Go to Amazon

Amazon also has different sets of the game such as the Pro Kit and the Rookie Kit. So you have several options to choose from whether you’re just learning to play Spikeball or you want to go pro.

Walmart is an excellent alternative because
you can find Spikeball sets from different sellers who may have better deals on
the product. Plus, you can also order the product online and get it shipped to
your nearest Walmart store if you like the option of picking up the item yourself.
The only problem is that they only have the classic 3-ball Spikeball set. So you
won’t be able to get other sets such as the Pro Kit and the Rookie Kit.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is one of the first
reputable retailers to carry Spikeball sets in their shelves. You have the
option of having the product shipped to you directly or buying it online and
picking it up from one of their stores. This option comes in handy if you want
to make sure the product doesn’t get delivered while you’re away from home. Like
with Walmart, this retailer only has the classic 3-ball set.

You can also find Spikeball sets at Target –
both online and offline. If you are planning to buy it from a physical store,
however, make sure that you check for in-store availability beforehand. Since
Spikeball sets are highly popular, there may be times when they run out of stock
in stores. Even at Target, you only have the option of getting the classic
3-ball set.

REI is another reputable retailer that
sells Spikeball sets online while providing an in-store pickup option as well.
REI members can even get a few dollars back as part of their member dividend.
Like with the other retailers, the only drawback is that REI only carries the
classic 3-ball Spikeball kit.

What’s
Next?

Based on this information, you’ll have a better idea of where to get a Spikeball set and which retailers would be the best option for you. If cost is a main concern for you or if you want a set other than the classic 3-ball kit (such as the tournament pro kit), Amazon would be your best bet. If you want an in-store pickup option, choose a retailer that’s located close to you and you’re set.

Spikeball or roundnet may only be a decade old but it has definitely caught on, with leagues popping up all over the U.S. It’s a fun and competitive game that’s super easy to learn for people of all ages and skill levels and you can find it at most retailers. In this post, we’ll provide you with a little more insight into the game, the basic rules, and how to play it. So you’ll have an awesome new game to introduce to your friends and family to at your next barbecue or picnic.

What
is Spikeball?

Before we can start discussing the
Spikeball rules, let’s first discuss the name of the game because new players
often get confused with how it differs from roundnet. Roundnet is the actual
name of the sport, while Spikeball is the name of a brand that sells roundnet
equipment. The two terms are often used interchangeably, leading to the widespread
confusion.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-format="autorelaxed"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424"
     data-ad-slot="6887066260"></ins>

There’s a perfectly logical reason behind this mix-up. The game was first marketed as Spikeball by the original inventor. However, other brands began coming up with their own “Spikeball” equipment. So in an attempt to preserve their trademark, the brand came up with a new term for the game – roundnet. (To add another layer of confusion, check out Spikeball vs. Slammo)

So even though some people still call the
game “Spikeball,” it should really be called roundnet. However, we will be
using the term “Spikeball” in this post for the sake of consistency and to
avoid too much confusion.

Spikeball
Equipment

A Spikeball set uses two pieces of equipment – a ball and a net. But although the game takes inspiration from volleyball, the equipment is where there’s a significant difference between the two. The ball is a lightweight plastic ball that’s typically yellow in color and much smaller than the ball used in volleyball.

The official rules of the game require that
this ball should have a circumference of 12 inches. This means that it’s
slightly larger than the size of a softball. Some players prefer to fully
inflate the ball, which makes it hard and therefore, much more difficult to
control. You might want to avoid doing that and instead inflate it till it’s
semi-soft so you can control it more easily.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-format="autorelaxed"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424"
     data-ad-slot="6887066260"></ins>

Even when it comes to the nets used, there’s
no similarity between Spikeball and volleyball. Instead of being vertically propped
up on poles, the net is laid out horizontally like a trampoline. This net
stands about 8 inches from the ground and is typically 36 inches in diameter
for 2-on-2 games. However, the brand has come up with a new XL net for 3-on-3
games that’s 45 inches in diameter.

The tension of the net is what mainly
affects the quality of play. The net should have consistent tension throughout
for proper game play. You can make adjustments by pulling it tighter in the
areas where the net seems loose. To test whether the net is properly set up,
try dropping a ball from 3 feet above. It should be able to bounce at least 12
inches.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424" data-ad-slot="3845954048"></ins>

Check out the following video from The
Spikeball Guys to see how to properly set up and tighten your spikeball net.

Basic
Spikeball Rules

Since Spikeball is inspired by volleyball, even
the rules have been adapted from it. So there are a lot of similarities in how
to play the two games. The main difference is in the equipment used, as
mentioned earlier, and the number of players. Spikeball is typically a four-person
game with two people on opposing teams.

These four players will surround the net
with players on the same team lining up next to each other. So like in
volleyball, the two teams will be standing across the net from each other. The
main goal of the game is to make it harder for the opposing team to return it.

This can be quite challenging because
players cannot carry or hold the ball. Plus the Spikeball rules allow them to
use only one hand to touch the ball.

The game starts with one team serving the
ball by bouncing it off the net. The official rules require that the server
should stand at least 6 feet away from the net, while the receiver may stand at
any distance. As soon as the server hits the ball, players are free to move
closer to the net as desired.

Possession changes as soon as the ball touches
the net. And players no longer have to stay on their assigned sides once the
ball is served. They can move around the net as much as they need.

The opposing team has up to 3 hits to
return the ball after they receive it. If they can’t do this, the other team
will score a point. Otherwise, they will continue the volley until one of the
team fails to return the ball. The volley also stops when the ball bounces more
than once on the net or when someone double hits the ball.

Here’s a video from Spikeball showing you
exactly how to play the game, if you’re more of a visual learner.

Scoring
Rules in Spikeball

Spikeball scoring rules are pretty straightforward. Games are typically played to 21 points but games can be played to 11 or 15 points depending on what the two teams agree upon prior to the start of the game. For tournaments, the winning score limit will rest on the specification of the tournament director.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3254726440082424" data-ad-slot="3845954048"></ins>

According to the official Spikeball rules,
the winning team must score at least 2 points more than their opponents by the
end of the game. But this rule can also change according to prior agreement
between the two teams or specification by tournament officials.

Image Credit: Elvert Barnes on Flickr

One or the other team gets a point at every
serve. Here’s how points get awarded according to the official rules:

When the ball you served hits
the ground, the opposing team gets 1 point.

When you hit the rim with your
ball, the opposing team gets 1 point.

When your ball bounces on the
net more than once, the opposing team gets 1 point.

When your ball fails to bounce
and instead rolls across the net, the opposing team gets 1 point.

When you catch or throw the
ball rather than hitting it, the opposing team gets 1 point.

When you double hit the ball
i.e. touch the ball more than once in a row, the opposing team gets 1 point.

When you fault two times in a
row while serving, the opposing team gets 1 point.

Faulting
in Spikeball

There are certain moves you cannot make
under Spikeball rules. These will be labeled as “faults” and if you commit
them, it could sometimes result in points for your opponents. If you’re going
to learn how to play the game, you need to thoroughly learn the conditions of
faulting. Here are the main faulting rules in Spikeball:

You need to stay at least 6 feet away from the net while serving the ball. Otherwise, it’s a fault and if you commit it twice in a row, your opponents will earn a point.

Players should not serve the ball straight out of their hand. Spikeball rules require that they toss the ball in the air at least 2 inches before they can hit it.

When you toss the ball, you need to hit it for it to be a valid serve. Any other action such as catching the ball, dropping the ball, or missing a hit will all count as a fault.

While you may take just one step as you serve, you cannot move sideways or you will commit a fault.

Crossing the 6-feet serve line while serving will count as a fault.

Hitting the rim of the net while serving or during play will count as a fault.

Players should not block their opponents from getting to the ball. When this happens, they have to replay the game.

You need to serve the ball so that the opposing team can reach it without jumping. Hitting it higher than your opponent’s outstretched hand will count as a fault.

When your ball hits the net and rolls to the rim instead of bouncing out, that’s called a pocket and it counts as a fault.

Spikeball Sets on Amazon

Final Thoughts

As you can tell from these rules, Spikeball isn’t a difficult game to learn and you’ll get the swing of things after a few games. There’s some nuances when it comes to faults, but as with any game, you’ll figure those out as you play the game more and more. We also have a Spikeball FAQ guide if you still have more questions. Finally, rules and technicalities aside, the goal is to have fun, so get out there and have fun with your friends!
